Police are appealing for information after a shar pei dog suffering serious injuries was left outside Braintree Police Station.
She was brought to the station at about 12pm on Sunday, September 20 by a man who told members of the public waiting at the front counter that he had found her running around outside but left before speaking to officers.
Pc Red Leeson, of Braintree CID, told Radio Essex: “She was in a horrific state.
“She was emaciated, had swollen and weeping eyes, a swollen nose and was struggling to walk.
“I found a specialist rescue centre based in Southampton that has taken her in and had her checked over by a vet.
“It was discovered she has scars across her stomach from surgery that has not been carried out by a vet, suggesting she has been used for breeding.
“She has also suffered some serious internal injuries and will need surgery on all her legs and her eye, as well as treatment for a bladder infection and other illnesses.”
The rescue centre, Shar Pei Rescue Great Britain (Trust), has named her Bella and is fundraising for her treatment.
She has not been microchipped and her owner has yet to come forward.
