A burglar from Essex, who stole a box containing human ashes before dumping them in an alleyway, has been jailed for 15 months.
35 year old Jon Murton of Chesterford Gardens in Basildon broke into a woman’s house at Beambridge Court last November and made off with her late husband’s ashes.
Twenty-four hours earlier Murton had burgled the home of a man in his eighties in Malgreaves but made off empty-handed after being disturbed.
Murton pleaded guilty to both offences at Basildon Crown Court.
The box and ashes were found in an alleyway and returned to the victim. The box was ripped but the ashes were found still wrapped up nearby.
A Kindle and large amount of jewellery were also stolen during the Beambridge Court burglary, none of which have been recovered.
