A burglar who was caught hiding in a hedge has been jailed for 18 months.
Police were called after two men knocked at the door of a home in Altham Grove, Harlow, and pushed past the victim, sometime between 12am and 12.30am on October 21, 2015.
They searched the kitchen before leaving, having stolen a wallet containing about £110 from a handbag.
The victim and his family had only moved into the property the previous day. He and his partner had withdrawn the money to see them through the next few days as they were due to attend hospital the following day for the birth of their second child.
When officers arrived, they saw two men running off into Harlow Town Park and pursued them on foot.
After a 15-minute search, they found Daniel Hampton, 26, hiding under a hedge, and discarded gloves and a screwdriver nearby.
Hampton, a labourer, of Waterhouse Moor, Harlow, was arrested and later charged with burglary.
He admitted the offence at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday June 21 and was sentenced on the same day to 18 months in total.
