Essex Police are appealing for witnesses following the attempted theft of a cash machine.
It happened at around 3.10am yetserday (Sunday October 2) at McColls in Church Street, Coggeshall.
A blue landrover and a silver Jeep were used to ram the unit which was built into the wall of the premises.
Five men wearing balaclavas were seen to use chains to pull the cash machine from the wall which was left in the road.
Officers attended and pursued both vehicles towards Tiptree which went off road into fields. The occupants decamped. An extensive search for the suspects was conducted but no trace was found.
The men were described as white and aged in their 20s.
Enquiries are continuing and officers ask anyone with information to call Essex Police on 101. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
