An elderly man’s died in a house fire in Clacton.
Neighbours were alerted by the smoke alarm sounding late last night.
The victim – a man in his 70s who was hard of hearing – was found unconscious in the lounge of the property on Warwick Road.
A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.
Station Commander Mark Wilby has told Radio Essex:
“The neighbours alerted us to this incident as they heard the smoke alarm though the adjoining wall. Unfortunately the homeowner did not hear his smoke alarm as he was hard of hearing.
“Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offer alternative alarm systems for people with sensory impairment, which alert the homeowner by vibrating or flashing.
“We urge any Essex resident to take advantage of our home safety visits, where we can discuss your needs and ensure your home is fitted with the most appropriate type of smoke alarm.
