Police are appealing for witnesses following a house fire in Leigh.
It happened around midnight this morning (Thursday, November 17) in Southsea Avenue.
Officers were called to the scene by the fire service who believes it was started deliberately.
A woman, aged in her 20s, had to be rescued from the top floor of the property by fire fighters. A man, aged in his 30s, who lives in the property tried to put the fire out but was beaten back by the flames. A window was smashed and the lounge was destroyed by the blaze.
Detectives are investigating and would like to speak to anyone who may have seen anybody acting suspiciously either nearby or outside of the property before the fire.
Anybody that can help is asked to contact the South CID team on Essex Police 101.
