Clacton Airshow is flying high after scooping a top national award.
The annual two-day spectacular, which is run by Tendring District Council (TDC), has been named Event of the Year by the National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA).
The announcement was made at a gala ceremony in Bath last week.
The airshow beat off stiff competition from events staged by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Lincoln Christmas Market and LeeFest near Tunbridge Wells, who were all runners-up in the category.
The judges especially praised the organisers of the Clacton Airshow for the way they had dealt with new rules and regulations brought in following the Shoreham Airshow tragedy in 2015.
They also stated…
“It is to be commended that the public sector is supporting events and this one is free to the public.”
NOEA Chief Executive Susan Tanner said that it had been a record-breaking year for nominations for the awards.
“The judges said the quality was superb so even being shortlisted was an achievement in itself.”
Tanya Ferguson, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Tourism and Culture, said that to actually win the award is a fantastic accolade for all those involved in the airshow.
“I have said it many times and it is true – we have a really top team running this popular event which attracted around 250,000 people over the two days in August.”
“This award is a testament to the hard work and attention to detail that goes into making this such a first class show which also provides a major boost for tourism across the District.”
“This year was the event’s 25th birthday and to pick up such a prestigious national award is just the icing on the cake for TDC and our partners who support us to ensure the airshow goes ahead year after year and gets bigger and better.”
Clacton Airshow was named the best event in Essex in 2013 at the Essex Tourism and Hospitality Awards.
Cllr Ferguson added…
“That was a significant honour but to claim best in the whole country is high recognition indeed and is truly deserved.”
