A man has died following a crash near Witham at J22 of the A12.
It happened shortly before 3.45pm yesterday (Wednesday, February 8) when a HGV lorry came off Coleman’s Bridge and landed on the southbound side of the A12, where it then caught fire.
The driver, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead shortly afterwards by the ambulance service. Next of kin have been informed.
A multi-agency recovery operation is ongoing, due to the nature of the load carried by the lorry.
The incident caused major disruption yesterday and this morning.
Drivers are being advised that the A12 southbound in Witham, Essex, between Marks Tey (junction 25) and Witham South (junction 20B) will be closed until at least lunchtime today. Further updates will be provided throughout the day.
Officers are investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision and would appeal for anyone who saw what may have happened who has not already contacted police to get in touch.
