From Friday 14 July until Sunday 23 July, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council will be supporting Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Love Parks Week’: a week that encourages communities to demonstrate how important local parks are to them.
With 60 parks and open spaces parks in the Borough, Southend-on-Sea boasts five green flag parks, that all deserve to be celebrated.
Running concurrently with Love Parks Week is ParkLives: a scheme that is run by Coca Cola Great Britain that celebrates the great outdoors, and encourages people of all ages and abilities to get involved with free sporting activities in local parks. ParkLives has two events coming up, with free Dodgeball and Rounders available for all ages at Southchurch Park from 4.00pm till 6.00pm on Friday 14 July, and again on Friday 21 July at the same location and time.
A Responsible Dog Ownership Day on Tuesday 18 July, organised by Make Southend Sparkle, is also inviting dog owners to come to Priory Park between 8.00am till 2.00pm and answer a responsible dog ownership question. Attendees will receive a doggie goody bag, and if they answer the question correctly, they will be offered free micro chipping, and free micro chipping testing.
During Love Parks Week, residents and visitors are encouraged to share their favourite park-related memories and photos with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council by using #LoveParks and tagging the Council’s Facebook account (We Are Southend) and Twitter (@SouthendBC), letting people know what they love about our local parks and open spaces.
Cllr Ann Holland, Executive Councillor for Culture, Tourism and the Economy, said: “Having all these local parks and green spaces so readily available can sometimes be taken for granted. But a lot of hard work goes into keeping them top condition for the public to enjoy and programmes such as Love Parks Week give us the opportunity to show how proud we are of our parks.
“Parks and green spaces are brilliant places to spend a day out with family and friends. With free access and open space, visitors have the opportunity to get active with various events and sporting activities, or just relax on the grass in the sunshine.”
