A chain of restaurants around Essex have started an initiative called Fone Free Friday, where guests are urged to enjoy their meal without the distraction of their phones.
Director of Grand Central Steve Haslam says the idea came about when he was dining at the Chelmsford restaurant with his children and noticed everyone was on their device.
Customers are encouraged to seal their mobile phone(s) in an envelope provided by the restaurant for the whole duration of their meal. “If they manage to resist temptation and not open the envelope until the end of their meal they receive 10% off their food bill.”
“You can see the anguish in their faces … “am I going to break into that envelope and lose my discount or am I going to really fight this one through.”
