Radio Essex regularly broadcasts a special community feature called the Essex Charity Update.
This is essentially a free 40” advert for charities and local appeals. There is no commercial benefit for the station.
We actively seek information from the numerous groups, small and large, across Essex.
They also come to us with details of their latest fundraising effort or volunteer search.
We use the information to write the script and get it produced and then send them a copy of the audio for their records.
We also advise them of when it will air and for how long.
Previous examples include an appeal for coats for dogs in winter, Age Concern befriending, Families in Focus, Essex Air Ambulance, Havens Hospices and even the opening of a new jazz centre run by volunteers. We have also featured a council Christmas toy drive, Christmas dinner appeal for the homeless and a medal-winning Paralympian trying to raise funds to get to Rio.
The Essex-wide voluntary group, Volunteer Essex, is also involved in the Essex Charity Update.
They advise their member groups and associations across the county of the feature and either forward the information to us on their behalf or get those groups to contact us directly.
In return, we advise those people who approach us directly of the existence of Volunteer Essex.
This is a great example of a commercial radio station doing something really positive for the local community because it’s the right thing to do.
