A suspected burglar called police for help after he became trapped by a security device at a petrol station in Basildon yesterday.
The man dialled 999 on his mobile phone and was heard briefly shouting “Basildon, near petrol garage, Help me, before the call cut out. A police operator tried to ring him back but the line was engaged.
Other calls were also received at the Essex Police control room as members of the public heard a person screaming for help from inside the Asda petrol station at Eastgate at about .4.35am.
Officers were quickly on scene with Asda security staff, a fire crew and paramedics and the man was taken to hospital where he was treated for leg injuries.
The man, who is in his 40s and from Basildon, has been detained on suspicion of burglary.
