Maldon District Council has confirmed it will stop giving discounts for second homes and empty properties.
Following a public consultation in which residents supported the proposal, Councillors have agreed to stop discounts currently paid for the properties including newly built ones – totalling £450,000 per year.
The Chairman of the District Council s Finance and Corporate Services Committee, Councillor David Sismey, told Radio Essex; “There is a strong demand for housing in the Maldon District. Because of this, it is vital that we make the best use of existing housing, and we will continue our work to minimise the number of empty homes. This change in policy should help to encourage empty homes to be brought back into use.”
