Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is urging private landlords to install sprinkler systems in the homes they own.
ECFRS has written to all Chief Executives with responsibility for social housing to remind them that up to £50,000 matched funding is available to Local Authorities, Housing Associations and Charities to protect the homes of the most vulnerable people in Essex.
The letter follows an incident last month in Parkside House, Chelmsford, in which a sprinkler system installed through the scheme activated after a chip pan caught light. The sprinkler contained the fire to the kitchen, preventing it growing and spreading damaging property and risking lives.
So far, four tower blocks in Essex have had automatic sprinkler fire suppression systems installed in flats and communal areas through the scheme but more funding is available.
