Chelmsford magistrates have been told a novice driver showed a total disregard for the safety oif her passengers after a crash left one of them with life-changing injuries.
Abigail Bonney – from Thomas Road in Clacton – was speeding and lost control of her car on a bend just five weeks after passing her test.
The 18 year old – who admitted careless driving – has been banned for a year and ordered to take a retest if she wants to get back behind the wheel.
The crash happened on the A133 Frating Hill in March – the car clipped the kerb and ended up n its roof.
A ‘black box’ fitted to her car by her insurance company recorded her speed increase to 71mph as she approached the sharp right hand bend on the unlit rural road.
Bonney had been driving three friends at the time of the collision. She was uninjured but her front seat passenger, an 18-year-old woman, is still receiving treatment for her injuries.
Two other friends, who had been travelling in the back of the car, suffered whiplash injuries and severe headaches.
