Essex Police are launching a campaign today warning of the dangers and consequences of making hoax or inappropriate 999 calls.
The force says it gets up to 400 such calls, preventing them from dealing with real emergencies.
Officials are warning those responsible could be arrested, fined and even sent to prison.
The “More Time to Fight Crime” campaign includes social media activity to help people report non-emergency crime online and a new interactive online game which asks players to decide how police should respond to a range of real-life incidents.
