A man has admitted planting four hoax bombs in a Basildon shopping centre in 1997.
Dean Platt, 44, was arrested on Friday December 9, in connection with four incidents that took place at the Eastgate Shopping Centre.
Packages with the appearance of bombs were placed in the centre on January 3, January 29, April 18 and November 11, all in 1997.
In each case, the Army’s bomb disposal unit needed to be called to remove and destroy the items.
Platt unemployed, of Verbena Gardens, Laindon, was arrested following new information and charged.
He appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Saturday December 10 where he admitted four charges of placing a hoax bomb.
He is due to be sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on January 9.
