Smaller airports – including Southend – are become the preference of travellers over traditional powerhouses – according to new research.
Saga Holidays says almost half of people they spoke to would pay more for the convenience of a local airport.
The travel firm says their study shows locality, cost and fewer queues are the main reasons for holidaymakers staying regional.
Experts say larger airports like Heathrow and Gatwick still have a part to play – but will need to make changes.
