A study of teenagers in Essex has revealed the reasons why under age smokers take up the habit.
Anglia Ruskin University spoke to year 10 pupils from across the county – who openly admit they smoke.
Stress and boredom came out as the highest reasons to light up – followed by fitting in and socialising.
The research also showed that people brought up in more deprived areas are more likely to take up smoking at a young age.
Interviews highlighted several young people saying it’s a coping mechanism – and that they need to smoke.
