Four men in their 20s die in early-morning collision after car hits lamppost in Huyton

Four men have been killed in an early-morning collision after their car hit a lamppost.

Merseyside Police were called at 2am on Friday with reports that a black Seat Cupra travelling towards Knowsley had hit a lamppost on Liverpool Road in Huyton.

Emergency services attended, but the four men were pronounced dead at the scene. Two were 23 years old, while the others were 24 and 26. Their next of kin have been informed.

A 27-year-old man who was a passenger inside the car has been taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

A temporary flight restriction zone, banning drones, was put in place above the scene. Police warned that those who breach it could face prosecution and have their equipment confiscated.

A cordon was put in place "as part of the initial stages of the investigation", the force said, while several nearby roads have been closed and are likely to remain closed over the weekend.

Superintendent Paul Holden said the bereaved families are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

He said: "This is a truly devastating moment for their families and loved ones, and it is now our priority to get answers for them on how the collision occurred.

"We know this happened very early this morning, but if anyone saw what happened or were driving through the area just before the incident occurred then please get in touch.

"Similarly, if you live in the area and have doorbell footage of the black Seat Cupra or the incident itself, please contact us."
