Husband of woman found murdered in Renfrewshire had earlier been charged with assault

The husband of a woman who was murdered in Renfrewshire had been charged with assaulting her just weeks before her death.

Stacy Mair, 35, was found dead at a cottage in the village of Houston at about 7.50am on Monday.

Her husband, Jim Mair, 43, was also found dead at the property.

Police Scotland is treating Mrs Mair's death as murder, while Mr Mair's death remains "unexplained" pending the results of a post-mortem examination.

The force said there is "nothing to suggest" anyone else is involved or at risk of harm in connection with the incident.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) confirmed to Sky News that Mr Mair appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on 6 July charged with assaulting Mrs Mair.

The case was continued for further examination and Mr Mair was granted bail meantime.

A COPFS spokesperson added: "When an accused person dies any proceedings against them come to an end.

"Mr Mair is dead, with a death report received, and as such any proceedings are at an end."

The pair married in 2019.

Mr Mair was the owner and director of Glasgow-based tree surgery company TRS Tree Management.

Mrs Mair, who was from Falkland in Fife, was also a director of the firm but resigned from the role in January.

Emergency crews discovered their bodies after responding to a report of concern for a person in the Corsliehill Road area of Houston.

Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team (MIT), as well as officers from the local policing division, continue with their enquiries and the area around the cottage has been sealed off.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young said: "Our thoughts remain with the families of those affected by this incident.
